DC's first Chinatown was on Pennsylvania Avenue in the 1880s. When the government cleared that land for the Federal Triangle in the 1930s, the community moved to the H Street area, where it stayed. The Friendship Archway over H Street went up in 1986, a joint project with DC's sister city, Beijing, and the arena opened next door in 1997. The neighborhood looks very different today, but the archway, the restaurants and the yearly Lunar New Year parade keep its history visible.
