The circle started out as Iowa Circle. In 1901, President William McKinley dedicated the 25-foot equestrian statue of Union General John A. Logan, who had lived at 4 Logan Circle, and Congress renamed the circle for him in 1930. In the early 1900s, 14th Street was a major shopping street and "auto row," full of car showrooms. After the 1968 riots hit the 14th and U Street corridors hard, the area went through decades of decline. The houses around the circle became a historic district in 1972, and from the 2000s on, those old showrooms turned into the restaurants and theaters 14th Street is known for today.
