The name comes from "Friendship," a tract of about 3,000 acres granted to two colonists in 1713. Until around 1900 there were only a couple of homes here, including a blacksmith shop and stagecoach stop run by the Ball family. The Georgetown streetcar line reached the area in 1890, and by 1914 the land had become a small community. Neighbors spent much of the 1970s fighting big development plans, and the Friendship Heights Metro station opened in 1984. Today the old Mazza Gallerie mall has been replaced by the Residences at Mazza, which began move-ins in 2025.
