The neighborhood grew along the electric streetcar line on Connecticut Avenue in the early 1900s. Its first subdivision, Chevy Chase DC, was platted in 1907, and others followed through 1918, laid out on a city-style grid with shops, apartments and houses side by side. The Avalon Theatre opened on Connecticut Avenue in 1923 and still shows films today. In 2021, the neighborhood's park was renamed Lafayette-Pointer Park to honor the Pointer family, a Black family whose land was taken in the late 1920s to build an all-white school and park.
