The name goes back to 1815, when newspaper publisher Joseph Gales Jr. bought the land and named his estate after his birthplace in England. On October 17, 1888, the Eckington and Soldiers' Home Railway started running here as Washington's first electric streetcar line, and the rowhouse neighborhood grew up around it. The B&O's Metropolitan Branch brought warehouses and factories, including a Nabisco bakery, to the blocks along the tracks. Today that same rail corridor carries the Red Line and the Met Branch Trail.
