The village here was first called Crystal Springs and then Brighton, but the mail kept ending up in Brighton, Maryland, so in the 1840s residents picked a new name: Brightwood. Emory Methodist Church was founded in 1832, and Fort Stevens went up beside it during the Civil War, partly on land taken from Elizabeth Proctor Thomas, a free Black woman who lived there. On July 11 and 12, 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked the fort, and President Lincoln, watching from the parapet, came under enemy fire. The streetcar arrived in 1899, and the Brightwood Citizens' Association, formed in 1891, was the first civic group in Northwest DC.
