The first settlement followed the old road to Chain Bridge, today's Chain Bridge Road, after DC was organized in 1801. During the Civil War, Battery Kemble guarded the bridge, and freed and escaped enslaved people formed a community nearby that kept growing after the war. Its children went to a one-room schoolhouse from 1865, replaced in 1923 by the Chain Bridge Road School. The western half of Kent filled in during the 1930s and 40s with Colonial Revival houses. With no restrictive covenants, Kent welcomed Black and Jewish families when much of DC didn't, and today modernist houses, including one by Walter Gropius, sit beside 18th-century farmhouses.
