The name goes back to John Tayloe III, who bought about 200 acres here in 1803, kept racehorses on it and named it after a town in West Sussex, England. His heirs sold the estate to developers in 1887, and in 1889 the "Petworth" subdivision was laid out to match the L'Enfant Plan, which is why the neighborhood has those grand circles and diagonal avenues. A streetcar up Georgia Avenue made the area easy to reach in the early 1900s, and in the 1920s and 1930s builders like Morris Cafritz and the D.J. Dunigan Company filled the blocks with the brick rowhouses you see today. The Petworth Library opened in 1939, and today the Upshur Street strip is one of the busiest little dining corridors in Ward 4.
