The land was part of an estate called Argyle, which Thomas Blagden bought in 1853 from Russia's ambassador to the United States. His family split it up after he died, and in 1899 his son gave land for Blagden Avenue so people could reach the park. Lots were sold as Mt. Pleasant Heights in 1905 and Argyle Park in 1907, but the name Crestwood only arrived in June 1938, when builders broke ground on "Crestwood at Rock Creek Park." The first model home opened that October on Argyle Terrace, and more than 130 building permits followed by 1941. From the 1950s on, Black architects, many tied to Howard University, designed some of the city's first Mid-Century Modern houses here.
