The name came from the swamps and puddles left behind when Tiber Creek overflowed, as a newspaper reporter described the ground around the new St. Aloysius Church in the late 1850s. Irish families escaping the Great Famine settled here, many of them working construction and at the Government Printing Office on North Capitol Street. Gonzaga College High School moved next to the church in 1871, and from 1886 to 1889 the Swampoodle Grounds ballpark hosted Washington's National League team; Connie Mack made his major-league debut there. Then came Union Station, which opened in 1907. Building it wiped out more than ten blocks and buried Delaware Avenue under the rail yards, and by World War II the name was mostly forgotten.

The federal printing plant that started on H Street in 1856 and gave many Swampoodle families steady work. Its big red-brick buildings still line North Capitol Street. It's a federal workplace, so view it from the sidewalk.
