The name comes from Fort Lincoln, one of the Civil War earthworks that ringed Washington, which stood just over the line in Maryland. It was never fully finished as planned, but the townhouse and apartment clusters went up through the 1960s and 1970s. Fort Lincoln Park, a six-acre modernist park designed by M. Paul Friedberg, sits on one of the old fort ridges, and the Shops at Dakota Crossing opened along New York Avenue in the 2010s. A new recreation center and early childhood campus broke ground in March 2025.
