In 1817 Brent built a mansion called Brentwood near today's Florida Avenue and 6th Street NE as a wedding gift for his daughter Eleanor, and the old Brentwood Road ran northeast from it toward Bladensburg, much of it along what is now Rhode Island Avenue. The house later hosted President Grant's visits, burned in 1915, and its grounds became Camp Meigs, a World War I staging camp, before the land was carved up for Union Market and Gallaudet University. The Brentwood name stuck to the streets and homes that grew up farther out along the old road.
