In 1883 developer Benjamin Franklin Gilbert laid out Takoma Park as a commuter suburb on the B&O Railroad's Metropolitan Branch, which makes it Washington's first railroad suburb. The name Takoma, said to mean "high up" or "near heaven," was suggested by Ida Summy. Gilbert ran a temperance restaurant downtown, and early deeds banned liquor sales. The Maryland side incorporated as its own town in 1890, while the DC side kept the Takoma name. In the 1960s residents helped beat back the North Central Freeway, which would have cut through the neighborhood, and in 1983 the DC side became a historic district covering about 160 buildings, many of them Stick and Shingle style homes from the 1800s.
