Much of this land was marsh until the Army Corps of Engineers began filling the Anacostia flats in the 1880s, and the lower part of the neighborhood was once sold as North Randle Highlands. The name Greenway came in 1940, when developer Morris Cafritz built a garden community here for defense workers, followed by the 796-unit Greenway Apartments in 1941. Two creeks, Pope Branch and a tributary from Fort Dupont, still wind through the neighborhood under the trees.
