Like its neighbor, Benning Heights takes its name from William Benning, the early farmer and businessman who owned most of the land here. During the Civil War, the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery built Fort Chaplin on these hills in early 1864 to cover the flank of Fort Mahan, and the fort site is still a wooded park today. In 1895, Woodlawn Cemetery opened along Benning Road as a burial ground for Black and white Washingtonians, and it became the resting place of some of the most important Black leaders of the 1800s.
