The market has deep roots. It opened in 1931 as Union Terminal Market, a wholesale and retail center that replaced the old Center Market near the National Mall, and for decades it was where much of the city's fruit and vegetables passed through. The open-air farmers' market closed in 1976. In 2012 the developer EDENS restored the hall and reopened it as a food market with dozens of local vendors, and the district has been filling in with restaurants, shops and apartments ever since.
