This shoreline has been a working waterfront for more than 200 years. The Municipal Fish Market opened here in 1805, 17 years before New York's Fulton Fish Market, and it's still selling crabs and fish today. The modern Wharf was built in two phases. Phase 1 opened on October 12, 2017, and Phase 2 was finished in October 2022. All told, it's a $3.6 billion project covering 24 acres of land and 50 acres of water. The name came from Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who remembered that people called this stretch "the wharf" long before the cranes showed up.
