Early maps called it Turkey Buzzard Point. In the 1790s it went by Young's Point and then Greenleaf's Point, after landowners Notley Young and James Greenleaf. George Washington and Pierre L'Enfant picked the tip for a military post in 1791, and that post is now Fort McNair. The Lincoln assassination conspirators were tried and hanged there in 1865. Through the 1900s the rest of the point filled up with a Pepco power plant, oil and gas storage and, later, the Coast Guard headquarters. That changed when Audi Field opened on July 14, 2018. Since then, The Stacks and other new buildings have been turning the industrial blocks into a real neighborhood.
