Georgetown was here before Washington was. In 1751 Maryland's legislature approved a 60-acre town on the Potomac, surveyed in 1752 and named either for King George II or for founders George Gordon and George Beall. Kennedy proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier in a booth at Martin's Tavern.
