Until the 1930s there was almost nothing here but Bladensburg Road. New York Avenue was pushed east to meet it in 1931, and a year later the Cafritz company started the first houses on Randolph Place, now Rand Place. In 1935 the Fox Brothers added a row of two-story Colonial and English-style brick homes they marketed as "The Village," priced at $6,750 each. The 185-unit Parkway Plaza apartments followed in 1962, and the developer donated the land for the neighborhood's recreation center and police station. That rec center was rebuilt and reopened in November 2022.
