Most of the houses are Federal-style brick rowhouses from around 1920, with front porches, small yards and alleys running behind them. The name came from the neighborhood itself. As local lore tells it, around 1960 a group of boys who played football in the alleys between Bryant and Channing Streets picked up the word "stronghold" from the western Broken Arrow, which they saw at the old Sylvan Theater on Rhode Island Avenue, and started calling the blocks home "the stronghold." The name stuck, and in 1991 neighbors formed the group that became today's Stronghold Civic Association, which still hosts an annual block party.

Founded in 1858 by a German Lutheran congregation, a nine-acre garden cemetery with winding paths, old trees, Victorian carved stones, a 1927 stone gatehouse and views of the Capitol. William Petersen, whose house took in Lincoln after he was shot, is buried here. It's still active, so please visit respectfully.
