This was mostly forest until real estate developer Max Sugar started building here in late 1940. His 250 brick detached houses, first sold as "Dupont Village," opened in 1941 for defense workers moving to Washington before World War II. The neighborhood takes its name from Fort Davis, an earthwork fort Union troops built in August 1861 to guard the eastern approaches to the city. Its walls are still there inside Fort Davis Park.
