The neighborhood began in 1873, when Frederick W. Jones laid out the Ivy City Subdivision as a rural community for African American families. In 1879 a racetrack and fairground opened here, and President Rutherford B. Hayes spoke at the first National Fair. Racing ran on and off until about 1901. In 1911 the Alexander Crummell School opened on Gallaudet Street, the first DC school named for an African American. A big rail yard followed, and in 1937 the Hecht Company built its glass-brick Streamline Moderne warehouse on New York Avenue. Today the warehouse holds apartments and shops, and the old industrial blocks around it are full of distilleries and taprooms.
