From 1890 to 1908 this ground was the Benning Race Track, where Washington's politicians came to watch the horses, until Congress banned racing in the District. In 1942 a developer bought the old track, and radio evangelist Elder Lightfoot Solomon Michaux backed Mayfair Mansions, designed by Howard University architect Albert I. Cassell and finished in 1946 as homes for working- and middle-class Black families. The Colonial Revival complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
